Author Event
Jaida Jones & Danielle Bennett: Havemercy

I'm posting this now because the other day my cousin was over, and he said, "Jaida, are you going to actually post about this event in advance, unlike the New York Comic Con thing, which you only posted about about five hours before it happened?" And I thought, "Why cousin, you are so clever, of course I shall!" So yes. If you come, I will be forever grateful. If you tell other people to come, I will be even more grateful. This gratitude might involve cookies alongside the chance to see my skills as a public speaker, which are, you know, they're. Okay anyway.

That being said, impromptu audience poll: at signings/author events, do you guys like readings or a song-and-dance kind of routine better? Trying to decide what to do is difficult.

Note: my to-do list is to 1. reply to some comments, now that all visitors have left the building, and 2. make some more livejournal posts with more interesting questions in them. Once Dani and I finish the second book. Which is due so soon. Oh heavens.

If I come up and say "OH HAI JAIDA IT IS VAL FROM LJ!!!" will you be glad to see me?

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 17:41:58 UTC 3 years ago

YES. I will be so glad. Please do this. I cannot emphasize how glad I would be, because I don't know the HTML that makes text sparkly.

SONG AND DANCE. Preferably with monkeys. or, OOOH. You could do a puppet show!

I've never actually been to a thing like this - unless you count badfic readings at cons - so I don't really have any expectations. Except for cookies. There better be cookies!

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 17:42:56 UTC 3 years ago

Okay I will bake cookies. And then everyone can eat cookies and be happy; perhaps the entire reading will be a debate on what the best kind of cookie is. You know, like, nuts in chocolate chip yes or no, that kind of thing about which everyone can get super passionate.

Curse you, Jaida! I will be in India by then! You couldn't have made it three days earlier?? Would have been awesome to see you before I left.

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 17:43:35 UTC 3 years ago

NOOOOOO I wanted you to come so very badly. Curses and fie! Also, lucky you, for you are going to INDIA?! Holy cripes! I am so jealous!

Nice new layout, btw. :D

Neato! I'm about 75 pages in :) And live within walking distance. And am planning on getting a job at that store, *crosses fingers*

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 17:44:34 UTC 3 years ago

Dude. You HAVE to get a job there. Then I can come in and start screaming your name whenever I want a book and can't find it. Okay, perhaps that is not encouragement exactly. OR IS IT?!

[info]grayscaled

July 2 2008, 17:49:47 UTC 3 years ago

Considering that's about a ten minute walk from my parent's place, it would be very silly if I didn't go. Plus, I need to get my grubby hands on the book. Which, I hear, is levels of unparalleled awesome.

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 17:51:31 UTC 3 years ago

Phwah! And then we can meet at last! For some reason, I don't know if you have found this to be the case as I have, but I am always able to meet up with people from like, England! and Canada! and all sorts of other places, before I ever manage to meet with people who live like, three blocks away.

I had no idea song-and-dance was an option.

*put on calendar*

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 17:52:50 UTC 3 years ago

YAY! Oh man. It has been so long since last I saw you! I think fondly back on that day so often, it's kind of silly. But man. It is one of the best memories of all time. Ahem, anyway.

Song and Dance is totally an option. One of the best readings I've been to in a long time was by Libba Bray, who offered a dazzling rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" using a Ken doll.

[info]lolafeist

July 2 2008, 17:59:08 UTC 3 years ago

I think the whole wacky story of the birth of the book would completely engage the audience.

Although personally I'd enjoy either one of you reading any of Rook's passages. I... possibly just enjoy swearing way, way too much.

I can't imagine reading my own writing to anyone. I'd die.

Additionally, I hope some sort of wild whirlwind tour takes you to Florida. I will bring knitted things and hugs. And I'll probably fall over as I am now totally intimidated. Thanks! ::grin::

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 18:00:54 UTC 3 years ago

Yeah, maybe there will be some hilarious tales of sensitivity training and how the book got written basically while I was supposed to be editing a magazine about romantic decorating and Dani was supposed to be making venti frappuccinos and how the hell do you spell a frappuccino? Frappoochionio. There.

I have always wanted to play duck duck goose with a famous Authornat a reading, & if I should ever be so famous with my own writing, i would promise duck
duck goose at all my events.

Ps; I bought & am reading & love the book.
PPS: so sad I moved & can't go to the event.

Noooooo stinky moving. Although it is probably for the best because who, honestly, can afford to live here? I wish you could come nonetheless, so that you could heckle us from the audience!

Will be in Chicago for college orientation that day! Which, practically speaking, is not much different from being in Michigan, BUT STILL. SADNESS AND WOE.

I am sure you will have a splendid time and an audience full of people who adore you and your brilliant, genius writing. I will think of you fondly, as I scurry around scheduling classes and hiding from the monks (ACTUAL MONKS. I'm afraid they will track me down somehow and tsk disappointedly at me).

P.S. You have an entire sidebar of amazing and flattering reviews, how sexy is that?

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 18:15:01 UTC 3 years ago

ORIENTATION! oh man. I hope you are are oriented well. That was such a crazy/exciting/insane time for me, I remember sleeping so well because "orientation" basically meant "running around doing 8 million things without pausing to breathe, eat, or sit down." :D GOOD LUCK!

Wait, why are there monks?!

I like the song-and-dance routine at signings I go to, which is perhaps why I enjoyed Terry Pratchett's more than Neil Gaiman's. I figure I'm going to read the book anyway, so I like hearing authorial anecdotes instead.

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 19:01:41 UTC 3 years ago

Ahhhhh I am so jealous, I wish to one day see a Terry Pratchett reading/signing/song-n-dance routine!

[info]olukemi

July 2 2008, 18:28:26 UTC 3 years ago

You know I'll be there! Shell might not, however, considering she'll be working again by the time this rolls around.

And now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever been to an actual reading. All the signings I've been to have been Q&A sort of stuff - no wait, I lie! Neil Gaiman read some of Coraline when I saw him a couple of years ago. I don't know as I have a rpeference for either as I'm usually too busy having a minor heart attack that Teh Author is RIGHT THERE OMG. which I'll be doing when I come to see you guys, fyi.

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 19:02:32 UTC 3 years ago

Noooo Shell has to come so I can get up in her face and be all, Where are the princes, I want to read about them, where are they, snap snap. See? She would so love that, of course she has to come.

DUDE. I just wanted to drop a line and say I saw you and Dani on the news yesterday! I just about fell off my flipping couch, omfg. I was like, "DUDE. DUDE. THAT'S JAIDA AND DANI. ON MY TELEVISION. :O!!!!!!"

You guys are super awesome, and I would be at the event if I could, but Vancouver's a little too far away ;)

I vote for a song and dance anyway!

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 19:03:38 UTC 3 years ago

Mweep! hahaha what news? Were we awful? Were we shiny? It's so possible.

The next time I go out to the West Coast to hang with Dani and her family gang, I'm going to have to stop over more in Vancouver and then we can have some songs AND dances.

Guess I'll have to settle for getting my book signed by you ladies at SDCC. ♥

Anything you do -- from reading to dancing -- is bound to be awesome, but I think when one is dealing with two authors especially one wants to hear the banter and the Q+A and get a peek behind the scenes.

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 19:05:34 UTC 3 years ago

Otakonnnnnn. OTAKONNNNNN. Also, Peter Beagle is going to be there!

Mmmm banter. That is, assuming we have banter at all. We're so used to communicating solely by means of demented IMs or emails like "Wait, what was that character's name again? Hmmmm..." that I don't think we know how to talk anymore.

What is your icon from, it's making me crack up.

If you ever make it to the West Coast, do say something about it!

And arent the icons from thremedon brilliant? I snagged four. =)

Urgh, this is inksplotched, by the way. My phone wont let me log in.

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 19:06:54 UTC 3 years ago

Whereabouts on the West Coast are you? Frequently we are in Victoria/Vancouver. And sometimes I go to Seattle as I have relatives there who own a giant palatial house of glory.

The icons are so good. SO GOOD. I love them and want them all!

July 2 2008, 19:01:56 UTC 3 years ago

I can't be there myself, since I live a thousand or so miles away, but just as a general thing, I prefer song-and-dance to readings. I can read the book on my own; I'd much rather that author events provide me with info and entertainment that I don't already have sitting on my bedside table.

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 19:08:06 UTC 3 years ago

Excellent point. That is what we were leaning towards, though then of course one has to actually figure out how to be entertaining. But the main issue is that everyone has such specific ideas of voices in their heads! And those voices are probably not our voices. So definitely we're leaning towards not-reading at this point.

Woo, I can answer Yes to all three questions!! (Read it last week in a day, it was lovely.)

I'm not sure if I can make it out there that day, but I will try!

Also, in answer to your question, I'd kind of like half song and dance, half reading. /is ever so helpful

[info]ladyjaida

July 2 2008, 19:13:32 UTC 3 years ago
